MORRISTOWN – A Frelinghuysen Middle School sixth-grader turned a spur of the moment audition into a starring role on the Mayo Performing Arts Center stage this March.

Shannon Melody Burns, 11, from Morris Twp. will perform as a finalist in Morristown Onstage.

“It was a last minute decision because I love to sing and I wanted to be in the spotlight,” said Burns.

She will be singing “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” a song she’s auditioned with before, but the second time turned out to be the charm.

“I sang it when I auditioned in first grade but was terribly nervous, so I wanted to try it again,” Burns said. “I’ve always loved to sing, but never had anywhere to perform.”

Burns said she plans to practice by singing in the shower (due to the good acoustics) and singing for her friends. She believes she has a chance to win because of her voice.

“I love sharing it with the world,” she said. “And I can’t wait to get started with my singing career.”

If she wins, Burns plans to take some friends to Great Wolf Lodge for her birthday and save some money for college.

“I’d also like to buy all my teachers breakfast from Dunkin Donuts,” she said. “Because they work so hard and I love them.”

Immediately after Morristown Onstage Burns will play Pinocchio in “Shrek the Musical.”

So it’s going to be a busy week,” Burns said. “I hope this opens up a lot of singing and acting roles and someday Broadway.”
